Using the Social Studies/History curriculum overview for your grade(s)…
Please mark each topic with one of the following.
þ Anything you feel like you cover.
¡ Anything you feel like you should teach but don’t.
ý Anything you feel should not be there.
Add anything you think is missing. The Child as the Neighbor: Family - mom, dad, grandparents. Wedding. Birth. family tree. Where do you live? workers, service jobs Unit 5: Love of country - ways to help the country? Unit 6: People around the world - don't do Korea, Sweden British Isles, India/Nepal.
Unit on Transportation - ways of getting around, land travel, sea and air travel (OAS) BACS Unit 2 - The Child as a Neighbor - We do not do this as a separate unit. We integrate it throughout the year into different social studies units. Unit 3 - Food, Clothing and Shelter - We do this as part of Children Around the World, not as a separate unit Unit 5 - Love of Country - We do this unit throughout the year in conjunction with specific Patriotic holidays. Unit 6 - People Around the World - We cover the location of countries, but only very basically. We cover Sweden when we are talking about Swedenborg, but do not cover it during this unit. We don't cover: India/Nepal, Germany or Brazil. Although I have had parent presentations on Brazil when I have children in my class who were from there, or their parents were from Brazil. I don't think any of the countries should be removed. It just needs to be clear which ones are optional to give the different schools the flexibility to cover the countries best suited to the students in their class. Also, the background of the teachers may effect the countires they cover. If they have lived in some of the coutries, it would make sense for them to cover those countries because they can speak about their experiences first hand. Native Americans is covered in the fall in conjunction with Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims. Inutits are covered in detail in 1st Grade, so I think they should probably be removed from the kindergarten curriculum.
Unit 7 - We cover the different holidays chronologically throughout the year as we get to them. We don't specifically discuss what a holiday is. We do observe MLK day, and President's Day and they are not specifically mentioned. We don't observe Jewish and African American holidays, but I don't want them taken out. It depends on the student population and the needs of the class. Other minor holidays/ celebrations that are fun but not essential - Valentine's Day and the 100th Day of school. (BACS)
WNCS-
Since I have a pre-K/K class and need two cycles, besides doing the existing units I have added units on Farm Life (science and social studies), and transportation (science and social studies). My unit on other countries is based on the cultures my children are from, then I add others (about six in all). I make sure we have a country from Africa, South America, Europe, and Asia included. - CRQ
What map skills do you teach?
Just a basic introduction to - Where are we? Where are we in relation to other countries? (BACS)
Same as BACS (WNCS)
Other things you would like to share with the committee in relation to history/social studies curriculum.
The kindergarten here has a very informal curriculum that doesn't cover any of the K units formally. These units are mostly, however, covered in the 1st and 2nd grades. (KNCS)
